Hi all, if there are any non-spambots left...
A friend turned me on (literally, heh) to IAT recently, and was lamenting the fact that it never got published in print. I read through it in a couple of days, and have to conclude that I wholeheartedly agree. I make hand-bound books as a hobby, and have been thinking about what it'd take to create a small run of hardback copies of the story.
I'm wondering whether any other fans of the story have done similar projects. Specifically, if anyone has typo-edited and pdf'd the story (with selected fanart) to fit on a commonly available US paper size, with the pages properly ordered for binding, I'd love to get a copy. If not, does anybody more familiar with the story's fandom want to help me find art, spelling-edit the story, or typeset it? Also, if anybody knows a source of squishy green plastic less then about 1/8" thick that would be appropriate for the outer cover of a hard-bound book, I'd love to hear about it... I've seen mousepads and stuff made from the right kind of material, but don't know where the manufacturers get it from.
My current plan, if I can find the materials, is to make a small run of 4 or 5 copies: one for the friend who showed me the story, one for Oblimo as an apology for stealing his story, one for me, and a couple for anybody else who helps out and makes a significant contribution to the effort through typesetting the story or finding fan art. These copies would be free, unless the materials for the covers turn out to be stupidly expensive.
If there's a whole lot of interest, I'm not against the idea of making 20-30 copies to sell. They would probably be relatively expensive, because a hand-bound book takes 5-6 hours minimum (okay, that's a software developer's time estimate, so adjust accordingly), and I'd have to figure out how much Oblimo wants per copy (assuming he's okay with the idea at all) as royalties for profiting from his story.
So, my questions:
* Anyone alive out there?
* Anyone wanna help make there be books?
* Will this make Oblimo try to sue me?
Cheers,
Miea
P.S. yes, yes, I know I should just email Oblimo. But I'm shy, and want others' opinions as to whether the project is even worthwhile, before bothering an obviously busy person who's also an intimidatingly excellent author.
I rather doubt anybody outside of a legion of virtual salesmen will see this, but on the off chance they do, I'd just like to say that if anything ever comes or has come of the idea in the original post, I'd be very interested in acquiring a bound copy of IAT. I'd be willing to pay $100.00 or more for my copy, and if needed would consider bankrolling the entire operation. IAT is a beautiful work of art by made by a gifted artist, and deserves to be shared and treasured. I only wish I'd discovered it a few years sooner...
